He rebuilt Constantinope in the year 532 AD after the destruction of great parts of the city during the so-called Nikia riots, caused by the impopularity of several of his ministers. He used the renovation to streamline and beautify the city. His rebuilding of an ordinary church destructed during the riots as the still-famous Hagia Sofia church in Constantinople is one example.
