Alfred Wegener formulated the hypothesis that there was once a large continent on Earth, which he called Pangaea. This was due to the fact that the borders of the different continents matched up and fit together.

The Earth itself wasn't called that. At some stage in its life, all land on Earth was connected in one continent called Pangaea (the super-continent), then it broke into pieces which drifted around and are still drifting to this day.

This is the theory of formation of the single continent on the surface of the earth. In the early stage of formation of the earth, it was in gaseous state. Then it cooled down further to oblate spheroid ball of liquid. It was covered all over by the water, as the temperature got less than hundred degree Celsius. Due to some unknown reason the water penetrated inside the earth. There may be some chemical reaction that caused the some gas to leak out and gave way for the water. Once water went inside it got heated up due to higher temperature inside. It burst out like the faulty cooker get burst at times. That created the porosity on the surface of the earth. That gave chance for the water to penetrate inside again. The same process got repeated again and again. So water went inside, got heated and burst to give you earth quakes and volcanoes. So you had the formation of the single continent on the earth.
