The Roman Empire was divided into two halves by Diocletian, so only half would fall when the Empire eventually inevitably fell. The Eastern half was more prosperous, and flourished on as the Byzantine Empire far after the fall of the Western. Its capital was Byzantium, later renamed Constantinople by Constantine. It was highly strategic, as it was bordered on three sides by watter, and located on the Bosporus Strait.
