The Humane Society of United States defines animal abuse as follows:
Animal cruelty encompasses a range of behaviors harmful to animals, from neglect to malicious killing. Most cruelty investigated by humane officers is unintentional neglect that can be resolved through education. Intentional cruelty, or abuse, is knowingly depriving an animal of food, water, shelter, socialization, or veterinary care or maliciously torturing, maiming, mutilating, or killing an animal. It is commonly believed that people who abuse animals are either showing signs of a predisposition to violence or have been victims of violence themselves. It may be a warning sign of even more serious problems to come. It is often recommended that those who abuse animals should be placed into counseling or receive psychological help. There are very strong connections between animal abuse and human violence. Animals that are victimized by animal abuse many times begin to suffer from behavioral problems as well.
Ignorance, be it or not on purpose
Indifference, powerlessness and denial.
Arrogance, inability of man to accept the equal rights of other living souls.
Economic gain, sometimes pushed to the extremes.
Image building, "look at me" being stronger than animals (circus, hunting, and bull-fighting), or with remarkable pets, or by wearing, e.g. fur coats, to look pretty.
Animal cruelty is an issue for two main reasons. The first is the effect on the animal itself and secondly on the human doing the abusing.
It is unclear how much consciousness an animal has. However, we can be pretty sure animals feel pain. Therefore, animal cruelty is just as bad as beating a baby. They may not be able to express their pain or fear, but it doesnt make it any less worse. It is never right to hurt something even if you consider it to be a dumb animal.
The other problem with it, is how it affects the person. A very high percentage of criminals abused small animals as children. When we hurt other living things, it takes a toll on us as human beings.
Animal cruelty is an issue because we have to stand up for the innocent.
There are many different reasons why individuals abuse animals. Animal cruelty covers a wide range of actions (or lack of action), so one blanket answer simply isn't possible. Each type of abuse has displayed certain patterns of behavior that we can use to help understand more about why people commit the crimes we encounter today.
Animal cruelty is often broken down into two main categories: active and passive, also referred to as comission and omission, respectively.
