Why animals breathe to stay alive?

It's more efficient.

The general term for cells extracting stored energy is "cellular respiration." Despite the name, this doesn't necessarily involve breathing or even elemental oxygen; however, the type that does is a lot more efficient than the type that doesn't.

Animals breathe in order to take in oxygen so their cells can use the more efficient pathway.
