Why are 7.1 channel receivers have 7.1 analog input and not digital 7.1 input?

There are two standards for high-quality named DVD-Audio (DVD-A) and Super Audio CD (SACD). Players for both types connect to a receiver via a 5.1 channel analog input. So these 7.1 analog inputs are mainly aimed to be compatible with players of those formats.
If you want to transmit 7.1 digital channels to a receiver, you can do that over the HDMI input. You don't need a special audio-only input for that, which is why there is no digital 7.1 audio input standard. HDMI is effectively that standard.
