I would say they aren't normally Democrats now, or at least they shouldn't register as Democrats. Catholics are required to oppose abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, and same-sex marriage, all of which are now supported by the Democratic party.
Many Catholics were Democrats from the late 1800s up to the 1970s, however. This was because the majority of Catholics in America were Irish immigrants, who were deeply in love with democracy, having come from a place where they had faced the complete absence of it. So, until the above moral issues arose with the Democratic party, many Catholics were free to be Democrats if they wished.
