Because Australia was colonised by the poms and when we were an established nation that needed a flag, they had the majority of the population and therefore had to have something English in our flag (the union jack) because they introduced trade and modernised our country, etc.
Since Great Britain was the parent nation of Australia, the Union Jack was included in the design of the Australian flag to symbolize this link.
