LCD displays are more delicate than CRT displays, so more care must be used when manufacturing and packaging them. Most technologies become cheaper the longer they are manufactured and the more are produced; the cost will naturally come down as time goes on. CRT displays have been manufactured for over 50 years, so they are still cheaper than LCD displays, which have only been remotely popular for 20 years, and only taken off for desktop computers in the past ten.

∙ 9y agoThe reason it costs so much, is because companies do not want you to fix them at all. They want you to go buy a new television. These companies artificially inflate the price of the replacement LCD panel by working with each other to price fix the panels. Several companies have been charged with conspiring to fix prices by the United States Department of Justice including Sharp Electronics. They have also been subject to several class action lawsuits.
But... the practice of charging more for parts is not restricted to electronics. If you tried to build a car from replacement parts, it would cost over $100,000 - not including labor! Parts have added costs for packaging, shipping, warehousing and installation - and in some places, there is also a cost for disposing of the old components, which are banned from many landfills.

Plasma screens are less energy efficient than LCD screens, per square inch. LCD screens are more subject to blurring than plasma screens. The color saturation and black-level performance are considered slightly better in plasma screens, though it depends on model. Plasma screens have a greater likelihood of burn-in than LCD screens.

Since laptops are so small they do not have proper fans to air them out so they don't over heat, if they did they would be useless. LCD screens are efficient to laptops because they do not create as much heat, therefore saves the laptop. You could easily use a classic glass screen for a laptop, but the LCD is much more practical.
