Why are Madden games consistently more awful the newer they are?

Because they have no incentive to make a better game. They are the only company who can make an NFL game so if you want to play a football game its going to have to be Madden.
I bought Madden11 after not having bought a football game since madden05, and besides obvious graphical and interface features, they are more similar than I had expected which was very disappointing.
In short, until they get some competition madden is going to be a rip-off, as they have no incentive to improve the game.
