Mothers tend to be overprotective of their children. This is especially true about their sons. From most mother-in-law experiences, the mother-in-law dislikes her son's wife/girlfriend because the wife/girlfriend may be the exact opposite of the mother-in-law. Jealousy that a new woman has entered into her son's life and now has all his attention is also a factor. Women who are face to face with another woman who is 100% different than themselves usually sees that woman as a threat.
Simply put, mother-in-laws will dislike their son's wife/girlfriend because of selfish reasons. It is time to let go of the little boy so he can be a man and make his own life. The wife/girlfriend may indeed be a lovely woman, but when faced with a possessive and overly protective mother, the son's wife/girlfriend will never be good enough. This unfortunate and imaginative competition held in the mother-in-law's mind is all due to the fact that she is no longer the number one woman in her son's life.
