No group is unified in any description. Some of any group can be described in any fashion, others cannot. Think of the question "Why do all bald men like vanilla ice-cream best?" You would immediately know that that was not the case - some able men like vanilla others like chocolate or neapolitan. This question has the same problem.

It depends on what you are considering the basis for intelligence. Zakir Naik, the Muslim polemacist noted that Westerners are far more knowledgeable concerning technology and science. Muslims in aggregate have made few contributions to science, math, history, and literature since the 1300s. However, Muslims consider themselves intelligent in matters of religion to the extent that the same Zakir Naik has said that the repression of Non-Islamic Religions in Muslim-majority countries is acceptable in much the same way that repression of math teachers who believe 1+1=3 is acceptable.

This is not to say that Muslims cannot be smart in matters of science, math, history, or literature and there are great modern examples of Muslims who have achieved greatness in these fields, but they are few and far between.
