Guns are heavily regulated in the UK leading to a much lower risk of any suspect being armed with a deadly weapon. As such, there is no need for many officers to be armed for everyday policing. In the situation where a suspect is believe to be armed, firearms trained officers will be deployed and each force has armed response units for such a purpose.

Police are already given firearms as standard in high crime areas, areas concerning national security (i.e. Parliament) and anywhere else at high risk of terrorist attacks.

What are the dangers of having unarmed police?

A police officer without a firearm is nothing more than a super citizen. As a corrections officer I am unarmed and had to deal with a jail break in the recent year... Unarmed in the woods. Talk about a sitting duck. Myself and numerous others could have been ambushed and killed before we could even see it coming. But if the legislators could save a few bucks and get their raises at the cost of not providing us with firearms or any weapons, what's a couple dozen lives right?
