Cops are overweight for the same reason that many Americans are overweight--obesity is a major health problem in the United States. Most law enforcement agencies have no physical fitness requirements for officers once they have completed the police academy. Many police departments offer pay incentives for officers that maintain a high level of physical fitness, but there are no penalties for being out of shape.
