Alkenes are considered unsaturated because of the presence of a double bond between two or more carbons.

A hydrocarbon is only saturated when there are only single bonded carbons present (Alkanes).

Alkynes have triple bonds which increases the degree of unsaturation by two for each alkyne. A saturated hydrocarbon will have the formula CnH2n+2; each alkyne added lowers the amount of hydrogen by 4.
