It's because the alpha female is more instinct.... like they know how to protect their young when the sense danger coming. When the male alpha is most likey to hunt for their own food... and too fight. Both male and female fight to survive... but when it's time for mating season and the pup is born... the mother is always in danger mode (wheter she's preg or not, its her instincts.)

How do wolves get to alpha?

Usually, 2 wolves would fight for a female, and the winner would mate with her, and they would officially become the alpha's. A wolf can't randomly fight to become alpha, because not all of the wolves are suited for the packs needs. Also, the Beta wolves become the alpha's after one of the alpha's die, or get to old or injured to lead the pack anymore. It all depends on the packs needs! ;)

Dog phantom pregnancy?

Phantom pregnacys evolved from when dogs were wolves because in a pack of wolves the alpha female will want to hunt after she has given birth because that is one of the main jobs of the alpha female. Thing is, if she has just given birth, one of the females wolves will have to suckle the pups. So wolves evolved so that the females who don't have pups will still produce milk so they can look after the pups whilst the alpha female hunts with the pack.
