Why are animals kept conscious during fur-skinning?

Because the people who are involved in this business don't think even for a moment of what they are really doing other then make as much money as possible as quickly as possible. It would not be efficient to worry about that sort of thing.
(Different commenter) Also, I hear that it makes it easier to skin the animal and keep the hide in one piece when they are still alive. So combine that with it being cheaper to not get drugs to at least knock out the animal, and...
