Because back then they didn't see them as human beings just animals so they said there black people. Now that they were given freedom, they were as equal as any other race. And its slang because people are not educated, its not called white people its Caucasians. When you see a Spanish speaking person you don't assume its a Mexican and call them Mexican they are Latin Americans. Just because they have a different skin color dosnt give you the right to call them by there skin but by their heritage or race (African American).
i have no clue!!!!!!the first offical church for African Americans called the African methodist episcopal (a.m.e) church the church welcomed ALL people
whos to say there weren't inslaved white people. Like my family was.
The Chinese. (or are they called Sino-Americans)
yes. it just depends on peoples preference. Some people do not like to be called black and some people do not like to be called African American. But I think it is proper to say African American
African-Americans say many things a bit differently, just like people from the south or other countries. They have accents. ^ (Not true at all some speak different its called slang or because they are from somewhere else in the U.S and not just black people speak slang white people as well along with others. For an example how many African Americans do you see on tv that talk proper? alot)

African Americans are a population of people residing in and are citizens of the United States of America. Many people who have an African lineage identify with this with this name.
most of the people in Africa are African Americans....I think
African-Americans are US citizens whose ancestors are (usually) from the continent of Africa. Africans who live in an African country would be referred to by their country of citizenship (e.g., Namibians, Kenyans) and would not be called African-Americans. An African-American visiting Africa would simply be thought of as an "American" or "US citizen" to the local population.
Pan-Africanism was the movement that united African Americans with groups of people from Africa.
Women, African-Americans, and Native-Americans
They come/came from Africa. So that's why they like to be called African-Americans
