Churches are plain or decorative based on the congregation that worships in the church. It is also sometimes a reflection of how much money the church has.
Typically, Catholic and Orthodox churches are quite ornate. They have many paintings, statues, carvings, etc. which remind the worshippers of different events in the life of Jesus Christ or the Bible.
Most Christian churches are moderately ornate. They will have some paintings, statues, or other decorative items but are no more decorated than a typical home.
Some conservative Christian churches are very plain. Some forbid having any paintings or decoration of any kind. They do this because they want the worshippers to focus on worship and on the sermon, not looking around at the decorations.
The inside of a church also puts the worshipers in a certain mood. Depending on how the church looks, they might be in a more reverent, spiritual, contemplative mood.
