The reason why the western side of the US is larger is because, Western land was sparsely populated. The U.S. government used a new survey system called "Township and Range" to divide the land into sections and quarter sections. The land was free to anyone who would settle it. Settlers were given land by the government in quarter sections. There was nothing in the way of drawing large states since the government owned the land. Township and Range surveying provided the large square shaped states as opposed to the small crooked states of the east. The boundaries of the east states were decided by a system of "Metes and Bounds", an old English system of determining boundaries using natural landmarks. "Meets and Bounds" results in a smaller state. For instance, rivers, trails, tree lines and mountains were used to go from one boundary point to the next. An example would be "from Crooked River to the Federal Road to the beginning of Miller Mountain and so on". Eastern states were more densely populated and most of the land was privately owned. States and territories were more likely to split and become two smaller states.

Western states are larger in area. Eastern states are denser in population.

This is because when colonists first came to America they claimed land. Later into the 19th century bigger pieces of land are in the west. Look at a map and notice how the 13 original colonies are the smaller states as western states such as Montana, Texas, California, and Alaska are bigger.

Why do the risk of quakes vary across the US?

All earthquakes are caused by is slippage of tectonic plates underneath the earths crust. The closer a location is to the meeting of two tectonic plates, the greater chance of an earthquake. The west coast of the U.S. is right along the edge of a tectonic plate, resulting in more earthquakes. While the east coast of the U.S. isn't anywhere close to an edge of tectonic plate, resulting in less earthquakes
