Chinese people have a legend from a long time ago that explains their new year celebration. Firecrackers came from this legend. Basically, the villagers from a long time ago were frightened from a monster in the mountains. After a while, they found out tat the monster is terribly afraid of lound noises and red. People would play with firecrackers whenever the time has come for the monster to go out and find some people from the village to eat. After a while, the traditon of firecrackers to scare away the monster continued till his day, only now, we use it to scare away evil spirits.
