Fireworks, especially firecrackers have been around for over 1,000 years, so they were not new to most Europeans and later Americans. The reason for the display for the 4th of July can be attributed to John Adams. In a letter to his wife, Adams stated that the say should be remembered with games, sports, parades, bells, bonfires and illuminations. The first fireworks display was July 4, 1777.
If July 4th falls on a Sunday, then fireworks are on the night of July 3rd. If July 4th doesn't fall on a Sunday, the fireworks are on the night of July 4th. While actual fireworks do show up better after dark, many juveniles 'play with fire' by setting off firecrackers (loud bangs) during the daylight hours. The professionally-staged exhibitions are always after dark.
