While the prehistoric ancestors of many species appear to have had 5 digits...current animal species are considerably modified.

Five functional digits is actually not that common. Primarily apes, monkeys, primates (including humans) and bears, raccoons (and many of their relatives) have five digits.

Most grazing animals have one or two toes.

Sloths, depending on species have 2 or 3 toes.

Cats (including the big cats), dogs and wolves have four (not including dew claws) which are vestigial.

Marine mammals have no digits but the bones in their flukes generally resemble hands.
