A committee was charged with the definition of the anatomical position of the human body. And what happens in committees is that no one really is satisfied with the ideas that were proposed. This this the compromise but really makes little sense. The palms of the hands should be facing posteriorly but are not.
At least everyone now uses this definition and all do understand what is meant when we speak about things.
