Gargoyles were very much a part of gothic architecture. It is a carved monstrous image that contains a spout that conveys water from the roof, a sort of grotesque gutter. The church viewed them as a method of conveying the concept of evil to the common folk. They were also said to have been used to scare off evil spirits and demons away from the church. Some religious purists viewed the gargoyles as idolatry.

∙ 12y agoOriginally, gargoyles were carvings attached to rain gutters on medieval churches and other large buildings of the time, which had water spouts to move the falling water away from the foundation of the building. These gargoyles were often carved with grotesque faces, and the water came out their mouths. The original word meant throat. Later, it came to mean the grotesque object portrayed.
