The BP oil spill comes from a deposit located 13,000 ft below the seafloor, at about 12,000 pounds per square inch pressure. The oil contains dissolved gas. As it flows to the surface, with the drop in pressure and temperature, the gas comes out of solution. The high pressure and gas expansion creates a lot of force enabling the oil to flow quickly in the wellbore to the surface.
Fire on top of oil rigs occurs to burn off the natural gas if it is not economically feasible to capture it.
