In ancient china, carp were silver and were kept as pets in ponds. there were genetic mutations that made some of the fish turn yellowish instead of silver. these fish were found and mated with other fish of the kind, until the fish became almost a bright yellow color. this was entirely new to the people of china, and varied from normal carp. the fish eventually became so beautiful that regular people were not allowed to keep them as pets. due to their rarity and color, they were called golden fish, which became goldfish. the term "goldfish" does not only refer to the color of the fish, but also to the breed availability and rarity at the time as when compared to other fish.
