The bending moments resisted by the supporting members will be greater than those encountered in the rigid portal frame. This type is mainly used where high base moments occur and weak ground conditions are encountered. Three pin portal frame have a pin at the apex of the roof, this hinge is to reduce bending moments in the spanning member but to increase deflection. To overcome this latter disadvantage a deeper beam must be used or alternatively, the design is simplified because the frame is statically determinate and, on site, they are easier to erect, particularly when performed in sections.
