Yellow - natural off white canvas treated with clear dope to weather proof the fabric. Some were painted with camouflage patterns and some had the undersides painted black for night bombing missions. After WWI, most airships were 'painted' with a clear dope giving a silver gray appearance.
It was to do with the blackout, so the farmer would be able to see his cows more easily when it was blackout. This was because all the lights were off to prevent the Germans being able to pick bombing targets. Because they had no lights at night, the cows were painted white so the farmer could see his cows, but also so people in cars could see the cows when they were near a road, i think. Hope it helps!
The US 101st Airborne Division sometimes painted white emblems on the side of their helmet to designate their unit. They painted the heart, club, and spade and placed a "-" at the top, left or right. These symbols were not official markings and represented the regiment within the Division and the -Dashes represented the battalion, I believe. It didn't make sense to paint white markings on a helmet while in combat. The enemy would see this and you could get shot. However, the Paratroopers also used camo netting and stripes of cloth to cover their helmets, thus covering the white insignias.
