That is because it is the only finger that can fully touch your palm and that allows it to help you move and hold things with your hands. If you don't think I am right, then next time you try to drink your water out of a glass, try doing it without your thumbs.

The thumb is described as "opposable" meaning that it can wrap around something in the opposite or opposing direction to that of the other four fingers; this gives a tremendously better grip than if all the fingers wrap around an object (whatever it may be, originally a tree limb) in the same direction.
