Not all invertebrates are smaller than vertebrates. Molluscs such as the Giant Squid can weight up to 275 kg. However, in general, and particularly in terrestrial habitats, it's because the stiff structure supplied by the vertebral column allows the organism to better support its weight against the force of gravity.
