Not all invertebrates are smaller than vertebrates. Molluscs such as the Giant Squid can weight up to 275 kg. However, in general, and particularly in terrestrial habitats, it's because the stiff structure supplied by the vertebral column allows the organism to better support its weight against the force of gravity.

all invertebrates are smaller than vertebrates. :)
they dont have a backbone
Vertebrates have an internal skeleton and invertebrates have external skeletons. Vertebrates are able to grow larger than invertebrates because of this. Invertebrates would crush themselves under their own skeletons if they grew to a large size.
The animal kingdom is divided into smaller groups called vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates are those animals with backbones and endoskeletons and invertebrates lack a backbone and generally have the skeleton on the outside of their bodies.
