Behavior, environment and genetics are reasons why some ladybugs are black with red spots. The black-bodied, two red-spotted, twice-stabbed lady beetle (Chilcocorus stigma) of Canada and of the United States fits into light-filtered forests and woodlands because of overall dark antennae, body, head and leg coloration. The specific ladybug species in question has red-marked upper wings and red- or yellow-colored abdomen to warn potential predators of unpleasant scents, tastes and textures.

Ladybugs come in various colours. Some are Red with black spots, our local ones in Wanaka New Zealand are black with some small regions of colour. Their conspicuous coloration is probably to deter predators, by signalling they are unpalatable or bitter.

Ladybirds (ladybugs) come in many colors, with the seven-spotted version (in red or orange) simply a well-observed coloration. However, the predominance of the bright red color is likely due to its identification by would-be predators, visually signaling that ladybugs are a foul-tasting, toxic prey.

Ladybugs are brightly coloured to warn off would-be predators. Colour combinations such as red, yellow and black in nature serve as a warning to birds and other creatures that they are not good to eat.
