There are more species living at the equator than any other area of the world. This is due to the amount of water and the warm climate. The environment affords Chimps all the food and shelter they need. Not to mention the trees provide them a safe haven from meat-eating jungle cats that roam the forest floor at night. They have lived in this area for around 7 million years, when the human-chimp ancestral population split into two separate paths.

They like the wet, cold environment. That's why you may see at zoos every hour or so, it sprinkles rain. Its so they stay happy, and they are in a happy environment to fit their needs.
