It isn't only boys that are colorblind. It is just that it is much much more likely. In people, the genes that cause color blindness are on the same chromosomes that determine if you are physically a boy or a girl. So color blindness is usually called a "sex-linked" trait. If you are a boy you only need one copy of the gene to be color blind, from your mom. If you are a girl you need two copies, from both your mom and dad. Since it is harder to get two copies than one, there are a lot more color blind boys.

The color blind gene is carried on the X chromosome. Females can hide this gene because they have two X chromosomes but because men only have one X chromosome, they are unable to mask the gene with a regular X chromosome.

Being color blind is tied to the same chromosome that makes someone male, so girls aren't affected.

Answer

I am a woman who is red--green colorblind. The trait is carried on the X chromosome. Males receive an X chromosome from their mother and a Y from their father. If the X carries the trait of colorblindness, the male will be colorblind. Females need to receive two defective X chromosomes to be colorblind, one from their father and one from their mother. If a women has only one defective X chromosome, she will be a carrier of the trait. My father was red-green colorblind and so was my mother's father, making my mother a carrier of the trait, although she is not colorblind herself. I have two sisters who are not colorblind, as they each received a non-defective X chromosome from my mother. I knew before my son was born that he would be red-green colorblind, as the X chromosome he received from me carried the trait.

because the gene that affects the most common colour blindness is carried on the x chromosome. As males only have one x chromosome, if they have that gene it will express itself. Females have two x chromosomes and if they have only one with the gene it cannot express itself because another form is present.

I don't exactly know why, but I do know that it has something to do with sex chromosomes. Girls' sex chromosomes are XX and guys have XY and it has something to do with how many X chromosomes there are. Sorry if i didn't help much.

If you mean 'males' by male humans, then no. It is more common for men to be color blind, but women (though rare it is) can be color blind.

Is it more common for girls or boys to be color blind?

Boys. The gene that causes the varying degrees of color blindness is recessive and must be present on the X Chromosome. Since boys have only one X Chromosome, it is more common for boys to be color blind than girls. It is still possible for a girl to be color blind, but it is significantly rarer. The problem affects 8% of Caucasian males and 0.5% of Caucasian females.

Who does color blindness mostly effect?

Everyone can be affected by monochromatic color blindness. Monochromatic color blindness is a condition where your color blind in only one eye.

Who is more apt to color blindness - males or females?

Genetic red-green color blindness affects men much more often than women, because the genes for the red and green color receptors are located on the X chromosome, of which men have only one and women have two. Such a trait is called sex linked Females (46, XX) are red-green color blind only if both their X chromosomes are defective with a similar deficiency, whereas males (46, XY) are color blind if their single X chromosome is defective. This sentence means that if both of the X chromosomes women are reccesive ten she has a color blindness trait. If the X chromosomes has one dominant X and one reccesive trait then she doesn't have the color blindness trait. The people who have color blindness trait are called a carrier.

how many males are effected by color blindness?

more than 199,546 males our color blind

Why is colour blindness more common in males than in females?

Color blindness is a sex-linked trait that is caused by a recessive gene. Sex-linked characteristics occur more often in males because they only have one X chromosome while females have two X chromosomes. The X chromosome holds much more genetic information than the Y chromosome. So, while females need to have two recessive genes to become color blind, males only need one recessive gene to be affected. Therefore, males have a greater chance of inheriting color blindness.

Does color blindness affect specific populations of people more so than other populations?

No only men more than females

Why are there more colour blind boys than girls?

Color blindness is a genetic trait passed from one generation to another. It is carried on the X chromosome and males have an XY chromosome where females have an XX chromosomal makeup. If the male gets the colour blind gene on his one X chromosome he will be colourblind. About 1 in 20 males get this. Women can be carriers of colorblindness meaning they can pass it on, but will most likely not show it. For a female to be colour blind both X chromosomes need to be colour blind, which is very uncommon, but does occur in less than 1 in 200 females.

Does your eye color effect the Way you see things?

Highly unlikely. Eye color and color blindness are not determined the same way within your DNA. -Eye color depends on what color your eyes your parents have and the dominance of specific traits and alleles. -Color blindness is linked primarily to gender. It's a sex linked mutation and occurs only on the X chromosome. Males are much more likely to be color blind than females, because it is linked only to the x chromosome. Males only have one x chromosome and females have two. For females to have the colorblind mutation, their father has to be colorblind and their mother has to be a carrier or colorblind. For a male to be colorblind their mother has to either be a carrier or color blind. It is much more likely that mother is carrier than colorblind.
