Why are most stones stiff?

Stones are stiff because they are solids. Solids have definite shape and volume meaning that they cannot be easily made to change their form resulting in them being "stiff".

Unlike some pure metals or other elements, which may be malleable, stones and rocks are made of crystalline compounds that break rather than bend.
