Motels came into existence, in the 1920s, as motor hotels. There were intended to offer convenient and inexpensive overnight lodging for travelers of the main routes on which they were located. They were supposed to be built as single buildings of connected rooms. They often did so, in the the shapes of the letters "U," "L," "I," or of the letter "I" in a series. Room doors opened conveniently onto lots where the occupants' vehicles were parked. An office for the manager, who could live on the premises, was part of the building, as was a small reception area. This was in contrast to the traditional model of a hotel as being located in the heart of the city, having room doors open onto interior hallways, and tending to attract a longer term, less transient and less budget-conscious clientele.
