A butterfly landing on a coffin is "symbolic" of an afterlife. Butterflies start as eggs, then larva or "caterpillars" and then form into pupa which look like little coffins and were once thought to be dead. The emerging butterfly is reborn into a new, beautiful life.

To see a butterfly land on a coffin is thought to mean that the "person" within has been reborn or claims his new life as in an afterlife, casting off his human wrappings.

A butterfly of course starts life as a caterpillar and goes through a major change as it becomes a butterfly. It makes a chrysalis or cocoon and then emerges as a beautiful butterfly. This lead many ancient cultures to regard the butterfly as a symbol of the impermanence and instability of earthly life. The amazing process of change from a caterpillar to a butterfly also captivated many ancient cultures that believed this was similar to the process of a soul's journey from an earthly body to a heavenly body. In fact the ancient Greeks often symbolized the human soul or psyche with butterfly wings in art.

If you see a butterfly at a funeral you may consider yourself blessed and comforted. Some funeral homes offer a release of butterflies as a symbol of freedom. Consider the life cycle of butterflies from caterpillar to chrysalis and the exquisitely beautiful winged creature that emerges and flies free much like the human soul does after death. There is also the emotional anecdotal notion that butterflies only live for one day. This story is designed to tug at the heart strings but is not entirely true because the large majority of butterflies live for weeks, months and possibly a year.

i've seen somewhere in movies that it does....my guess is that it would represent the afterlife and the soul of the person is ''reborn'' or ''hatched from its body/cocoon'' :) ya no??
