Wow, what a horrible answer. They aren't expensive at all? It depends on who you ask. If you have a big income, then perhaps not. It is all relative to your income and what the item is worth to you.
Brand name ANYTHING is expensive for a few reasons. For one, you are paying for a name. And if the salesman says you aren't, he's lying. You ARE. You are also paying for the design, higher quality materials, marketing, and distribution. Notice I didn't say labor? Because most are made in China or somewhere in Asia where labor is dirt cheap.
You are most definitely paying for a big name when you buy designer brand. Look at Prada and Burberry bags. Ok fine, for the time involved to make them in a particular way, certain stitching, quality items, yes of course that costs. But does it really cost $2000? No. The majority of the retail price is the name. Sure there is rent, electricity, salesman salaries, but in the end, the bulk of the price is the name.
My best example is Tommy Bahama. I own about 25 shirts. The majority were bought used on ebay. I paid between $20 and $50 each. That is less than half the retail price. They are expensive because of the name, and because of the time involved matching the front and the pocket, but even then, it did not cost even close to $110 to make it. The cost is two words: Tommy Bahama.
It's the same with any big, well known name brand. You pay for the name more than anything else.
