They are not sure, but many scientists are thinking that it could be due to some "carry over" protection they have from being exposed to a virus in the distant past that was similar enough to this one that their immune systems can recognize the A-H1N1/09 virus and send antibodies from that prior exposure to help them avoid the infection now. Some are thinking it may have been the one that spread in outbreaks during the 1930s but other epidemiologists are still trying to determine the reason this typically highly susceptible group is at much lower risk of the H1N1 virus than young healthy people.
