Magma moves, it erupts out of volcanoes, and this can cause substances of different density to mix together. If these substances remained liquid, they would eventually settle out into layers by density, but if the rock hardens before this happens, then you have permanent mixing.

What is a pallasite?

A pallasite is a stony-iron meteorite embedded with glassy crystals of olivine.

Does olivine rock form to become soil?

Sand is formed from the breakdown of rocks. If a rock contains large amounts of olivine, then when this rock weathers, olivine sand will be formed. There are beaches in New Zealand that are almost exclusively made of green olivine crystals.

What type of rock is peridot found in?

Peridot, the gem form of the mineral olivine, is found in ultra-mafic rock, or in association with basaltic lava.

How andesite is formed?

Andesite can be formed by fractional crystalization (crystals of olivine and other mafic minerals forming and falling out) of basaltic magma, or by assimilation of wall rocks into basaltic magma (hot magma melting side wall rocks and incorporating it into the magma).

How is basaltic lava different from granitic lava?

Basaltic lava is far less viscous, has less silica, erupts at a higher temperature and is denser than granitic lava (properly called rhyolitic lava when it is on the surface). Basaltic lava is composed primarily of pyroxenes and calcium rich plagioclase with small amounts of olivine. Rhyolitic lava primarily contains alkali feldspars and quartz.

How do minerals form from solution how do they form from magma?

Minerals form as hot magma cools inside the crust, or as lava hardens on the surface. When these liquids cool to a solid state, they form crystals. When elements and compounds that are dissolved in water leave a solution, crystallization occurs.

Stony iron meteorite sometimes contain droplets of this silicate mineral trapped in the iron?

Olivine

What is the cleave of olivine?

Olivine fractures.

What is the Scientific name for basalt?

Secondary. Sometimes feldspathoids or olivine. is an aphanitic extrusive igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of low-viscosity lava rich in magnesium and iron (mafic lava) exposed at or very near the surface of a rocky planet or moon.

How does olivine form?

Ophiolites form when the ocean crust is young and buoyant. At this point, it is less dense than the continents and is pushed on the continental crust when tectonic action occurs. Ophiolites are a part of the oceanic crust and upper mantle that have been placed on a continent.
