Black-hat hackers (the criminal variety) hack computers usually for financial gain. They seek to hack into your bank account to steal your money and transfer it to their bank account.
Gray-hat hackers (a cross between a good and bad guy) usually hack just for the "lolz". They hack computers because they like to test their skills and the thrill of hacking a target. Most of the time, they report the vulnerability they found in an application or machine to the user so that they can patch it.
White-hat hackers (ethical hackers) hack computers as a profession. These guys are certified by law to hack into computers with permission by the owner to test its security. Experienced white-hats are hired by big companies like Microsoft or Google to test the security of their computers and servers.
Because people are retards and can't handle earning the objects (money, high level accounts on games etc.) legitimately so they turn to hacks which end up ruining other peoples stuff for their own personal gain. This is against the law and shouldn't ever be done. Hackers are smart people with illogical thoughts and when they start hacking they will never stop, they will eventually get caught but not soon enough.
Because they are a) bored idiots b) so they can access your personal information.
