In simple terms, the answer would be greed. If the average return offered in the markets is say 5% and a Ponzi scheme offers 10%, the double return can seem too attractive to turn away from. In reality, if it seems to good to be true, it probably is. Sadly, quite a lot of older people get taken in by such schemes because they need to find extra income in retirement to maintain their standards of living when inflation eats away at their life savings.
