The word telephone is Greek. Tele meaning "far distance" and phone meaning "voice". Ultimately, the word telephone pretty much means to talk from a distance. This is what the telephone allows you to do, hence the name.

The first cell phones were developed in 1973 by Martin Cooper of Motorola, he did have assistance in the development and invention. The initial device was large and expensive, the first portable "cell" phone and it was released in 1984. The reason that the name stuck is that the common name for the towers that the devices communicate with is known as a cell. There are usually hundreds of cells arranged in such a way that the consumers of cell phones are typically "in coverage" The frequencies that the FCC has restricted for use as a wireless network have the capability of penetrating building, however the signal can be weakened by several factors, large bodies of water, trees and the construction materials used on a building can cause a significant decrease. Different devices will behave uniquely depending on several factors of the design of the internal components used and the quality and innovation applied by the manufacturer.

Tele means distance or far away. Think tele-vision, tele-scope, tele-port. Phone -as in phonetic means sound. The origin of the words is Greek not Latin.
