Answer 1
There is a misunderstanding about Islam that it is divided into two branches- Shiat and Treeqat Musticism). The multiple duties of the last Prophet Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Allah Karim be upon him) as mentioned in the holy Quran are:
Sura Al-Juma'a, Verse 2. Translation: "It is He who has sent among the illiterate an Apostle, from among themselves, to rehearse to them His Signs, to sanctify them, and to teach them the Book (Qura'an) and wisdom - although they had been in manifest error-wrong.
Thus the duty of the last Prophet Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Allah Karim be upon him) was also to purify/sanctify the Souls of the believers. Later on, the people who strive to sanctify their souls by offering Nawafil and doing extra efforts in remembering Allah Almighty are called Sufi.
Tasawf is the same in Persian as Tazkia (Purification) in Arabic. We may say that Shariat is the Body and Tasawaf is the Souls. These are not different. The purpose of a Sufi is to perform Islamic deeds in their real letter and spirit. He leads a full life, earns his living through Halal (lawful) means, rears his children, performs his social duties honestly, yet in the thick of nights he bows to Allah Almighty, begs His forgiveness and wishes to be near Him. When he stands in front of Allah karim in his prayers, he forgets the world as Hazrat Ali (RAU) used to do. He follows the holy footprints of last Prophet Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Allah Karim be upon him) in letter and spirit.
Answer 2
The term Sufi comes the Arabic "Tasawuf" which means to envelop yourself in wool. It was a metaphor for how the Sunnis were trying to jettison all Earthly attachments and become simple and poor. (Wearing wool was for the simple and poor.)
