all guinea pigs lose hair (unless it's a skinny pig that doesn't have any lol) constantly. it's called shedding and it is completely normal. it is just the old dead hair falling out so the new hair can grow in.

now you may be talking about something different from that like losing patches of fur and being able to see skin. this is definitely not good. you should talk to a vet and maybe take your guinea pig in for an examination. if for some reason you don't want to or are not able to take him/her to the vets then you should look on the internet and or in books and try to find out as much as you can about what you can do (buying ointments or special cream at the pet store) stuff like that. you could even talk to somebody at your local pet store (hey it's worth a try right?). sorry i can't help you more then that. I'm not a vet and i have never had this happen to my guinea pig.

i just thought of one more thing. if your guinea pig seems to be scratching a lot and it's skin looks irritated it is possible it is losing the hair because of the scratching and the scratching is because it has mites or lice. if this is what it is you should be able to see eggs or little bugs in your guinea pigs fur but if you can't and the scratching is still going on you can probably treat it anyways. you can buy non-harmful (at least to the guinea pig ;D) spray in or shampoo to remove lice or whatever it is. again you can talk to an employee in the store and they can help you choose what would be best. when my guinea pig had lice we actually used a shampoo to get rid of lice in cats (this was suggested by the employee) and it worked great. after 1 or 2 uses they were gone and our guinea pigs were not harmed by the chemicals in the shampoo. but again make sure you talk to someone who works there before buying just anything that "looks" right.

Probably because he doesn't run around much and eats lettuce and pellets all the time. Also, some treats I give him have sugar, and most of the time he doesn't move much, even though the cage is a decent size.

There is a chance that your guniea pig is prenet. You may be over feeding, you guniea pig may be struck with bordem and not want to do any thing . You may just need to take him out of his/her cage and let them run around atleast once a day the may not run at first but after a wile they will realise that it is safe and will begin to exspoloor.

Natjchip:

Your guinea pig is fat because 50% of his food he saves just in case he doesn't get fed for a while. This doesn't mean that you cannot pay attention when he wheeks, which shows a sign of needing attention or food. Also, if your guinea pig is a girl, she might be pregnant and might be getting fat because of breeding. If you think that this is possible, consult with your veterinarian immediately.

Well, rabbits have very poor eyesight. So, to help escape from predators, their ears are large. In which, makes them floppy.

No, actually, rabbits have very good eyesight- which according to some people, is because of their vitamin-A rich diet. Vitamin A is associated to healthy eyes.

Rabbits that have floopy ears are naturally born that way.

Is the baby getting plenty of vitamin C? Guinea pigs do need calcium and vitamin D also, but their pellets should be providing enough. It is uncommon for guinea pigs to be suffering from a deficiency of vitamin D. If you are feeding "rodent food" or guinea pig pellets from the grocery store you need to switch to guinea pig pellets from a pet store. The pellets should contain a minimum of 18% protein.

Your description actually sounds a little more like scurvy, which is caused by not enough vitamin C. Guinea pigs, like humans, need vitamin C added to their diets. You can give fresh fruits and veggies, such as parsley, Oranges, apples, carrots, red leaf lettuce, and other fresh greens. I use a supplement in the water because I can monitor it better. I use powdered vitamin C from a health food store. The dosage is 1/4 teaspoon to a gallon of water for healthy piggies, which I double for pregnant, lactating, newborn, or ill guinea pigs. Vitamin C is not a stable vitamin (despite claims on packaging to the contrary) and by the time guinea pig pellets are 90 days old (from the date of manufacture, not the date sold or opened) it contains almost no vitamin C. This is a treatable condition but you should take her to the vet (an exotics vet who works with guinea pigs is the only safe vet to take a guinea pig too). They can give a vitamin C shot that will see you through, if the condition is scurvy.

For proper diagnosis you should take her to a veterinarian. I'm sorry to say, but I believe that you will lose her if she does not get a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Some guinea pigs depending on what you feed them, (like if you feed them lots of timothy hay and treats) will probably make them fatter. Also if they are not supper active they'll most likely gain weight and there is nothing you can really do to make them move.:)

Guinea pigs who are "floppy" are generally ill and should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Until you can get him to a vet, try to keep him warm and quiet.
