Why are rivers good for the development of settlements?

Rivers provide water, is the first and foremost thing necessary for the survival of most living creatures. For man, rivers provide the following: * drinking water * washing water * water for stock animals * irrigation for crops * water used in building and manufacturing * in some cases, a form of energy (hydroelectricity) * a means of transporting goods and passengers
