Human operators have to stay behind thick shielding, so robots are useful in being able to go close to the material, but they are remotely controlled by humans.

What is the waste of nuclear power?
Nuclear reactors produce heat, the heat then is used to make
steam, turning turbines. Therefore, the waste of a nuclear power
plant is excess steam.

Does Nuclear fission as used in nuclear power plants produces radioactive waste with long half lives?
yes, Nuclear fission as used in nuclear power plants produces
radioactive waste with long half lives. However, this creates no
problems. This wastes are either confined in the spent nuclear fuel
(that is stored either in wet storage or in dry storage facilities)
or stored as vitrified nuclear waste.

What two problems are associated with nuclear power?
Nuclear power produces nuclear waste, which can be dangerous.
Nuclear power can also be used to produce material for nuclear

Asked in Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Weapons, The Difference Between, Radioactive Waste
The difference between nuclear waste and nuclear weapons?
Nuclear waste is any unwanted material that is radioactive. That
includes everything from used fuel rods in a reactor, to protective
clothing that has contamination of a radioactive nature. Nuclear
weapons are typically a fusion or fission device used to attack
someone/ something/ some place.

Asked in Waste and Recycling, Nuclear Fission
Does nuclear fission create any waste materials?
nuclear fission results in the presence of used nuclear fuel
that should be:
either reprocessed (to gain back the remaining uranium and
produced plutonium and to get the fission products as vitrified
waste), or
stored as high active waste; either under water or in dry
storage casks.

What keeps nuclear energy from being used?
Nuclear energy is being used all over the world. It is used less
than it might otherwise be because of concerns about the safety of
nuclear power plants and the disposal of nuclear waste, which is
highly radioactive, poisonous, and lasts millions of years.

How is nuclear energy helpful?
Nuclear reactions produce a large amount of energy and most
plants are in standby than being used at any given time. Nuclear
reactions also produce no Carbon Dioxide waste, but they do make
nuclear waste which must be stored until the radiation decreases to
a safe level

Why is it bad to generate electricity using nuclear power?
It is not bad to generate electricity using nuclear power.
However, there are concerns some people have with nuclear power, in
particular with the side effects of it. In the process of
generating electricity nuclear fuel is used up and left as what is
called nuclear waste. This waste is very radioactive and a danger
to living things for upwards of 10000 years. This waste must be
stored, and debates about where and how it should be stored can
lead people to...

What problems are brought by nuclear energy?
Historically, mining and purifying uranium has not been a clean
process, and in many locations that is still the case.
Improper regulation, maintenance, or operation of a single
plant can release tons of radioactive dust into the environment
should an accident occur.
Used fuel remains toxic for centuries. To date, there is no
fully effective, safe, permanent storage area for nuclear
waste.
Transporting nuclear fuel and waste presents a large safety
risk.

What can be done to prevent nuclear waste?
Short of stopping to use nuclear power, and any other handling
and refining of nuclear material - you can't.
Nuclear waste is an unavoidable by product of using fission
power. It just has to be stored and treated carefully.
You can't if nuclear fission is used. Nuclear fusion would not
produce the highly active fission products that are the main
problem, but it's not a practical proposition yet.

What are some disadvantages of using nuclear energy?
Nuclear fission produces nuclear waste which has to be desposed
off and because of the nuclear waste's long half-life it takes
thousands of years before the waste becomes safe. Mining for U-238
is expensive and an enrichment process is required to turn U-238 to
U-235 before it can be used in a nuclear reactor, this takes time
and money and is another disadvantage.
