If by "smart" you mean to say, Why are people who are very educated or are above average intellect more susceptible to depression than others? One possible reason for their depression (or Bipolar disorder) COULD be that these people are just "over-achievers", who simply put allot of pressure on themselves all the time to do well in all aspects of their lives?
And in most cases, live very organised lives that might be noted for producing good practices in the form of well kept routines and admirable habits compatible for a working environment. These qualities are also their downfalls and are where the problems start.
It's funny - okay maybe not so funny, but I think back to when I was hospitalized - not for brain surgery, but for depression- and I was told that part of my problem was that I was too "smart" - meaning that I was able to analyze my life, and my failures, something apparently not all too prevalent among the patients. So maybe it's a side effect - there's so much to think about, therefore there's so much more we're at risk of getting depressed about.
Personally, I find myself anticipating myself burning out, or thinking about a future in which I'm constantly bored. Both things depress me.
amen brother...I'm not sure that I'm a genius but i do have a high IQ...apparently...and I'm extremely depressed...the reason probably evolves from the fact that i live life like a Chess game in that i have a talent of predicting other people's decisions/moves based on both future and present circumstances, wayyy b4 they come to those conclusions themselves...i don't really understand it but it kindof prevents me from making/accepting changes in life because i seem to have the same mentality of that a "time traveler"...being afraid to make any changes based on fear of f***ing up the lives of others...
it becomes a vicious cycle really, i need to change life due to problems in the present but can't/won't because of my fears of what will happen in the future as a result of those changes..and so i don't make any changes, i stay stagnant and so i get extremely depressed with life...and it just stays that way...

Normally my answer would be no, yet now I am in a different perspective, so my answer is that dumb people are only smart to those who are not as smart as those who are dumb, and as such they are dumb yet smart at the same time, but in varying degrees, and to different people.
