Smokers have repeatedly damaged the cilia in their trachea, larynx and lungs. Cilia are tiny, hair-like structures that help sweep mucous out of the air-ways and into the pharynx to be coughed out or swallowed. The toxins in smoke kill these projections and create more mucous. When a person has pneumonia, they also have more mucous. This elevated mucous count with the depressed cilia count gives the lungs more work than they can handle. Therefore, the mucous of pneumonia cannot be properly disposed of. This may eventually lead to death.

Because the smoke that is drawn into the system, gets pulled into the lungs and heart, around the stomach, the black smoke is also known for its, "poison", as it's called, so none of it is good for the respirtory, so when too much of it has filled the lungs, heart, and kidney, those organs, known as the respirtory system, start to shut down, thus, causing infections also!

I think it's because when they smoke the harmful gas gets into their lungs and poisons it. Smoking proably decreases the immune system since normally people who are healthy don't get phneumonia.

Hope I helped (:

The toxins that you introduce to your body make the phagocytes go nuts, so they are already trying to fight off the toxins in your system. Add to those toxins some bacteria or a virus and you have your body overworking trying to defend from both. Since the toxins are more abundant, your body goes to attack those first, leaving the bacteria or virus to multiply and go basically unattended for a short while. This is also why it takes longer for smokers to get over their infections.

The longer you smoke, the less attention your body actually pays to what enters through your lungs. It fights less illness, toxins and growths as time goes by and eventually the tissues begin to die away... after so long of being covered in tar and other toxins and poisons and chemicals, your body looses the ability to transport the necessary units to fight off infections. You don't just gunk up the insides of your lungs when you smoke, you kill the cells and slowly shut down blood vessels. Osmosis and the transfer of cells through membranes only works if the membrane is in good condition, otherwise you either let to much through, or none at all...

Remember though.... green/yellow phlegm coughed up from the lungs is a sign that your body is still able to fight the infection. Bloody phlegm means that your tissues and blood vessels are no longer able to stop the transition of blood through membrane and that the infection is killing your cells. Best bet to stop having so many infections.... stop smoking. Start doing proactive things to heal your body and start taking the steps toward a happier and healthier life.

Cigarette smokers are more prone to infectious disease because smoking harms the immune system. The cilia of the respiratory are less effective, making it easier to get germs through this route. Also, the immune system is constantly repairing damage from smoking, making it less available for other tasks.

Smoking damages your lungs and allows bacteria to bind to airways more easily so you're more likely to become infected with pneumonia.
