It may very well be the same thing that is happening here in California.

The trees have a fungus which is spreading at a rate that is mind numbing.

Phytophthora ramorum is the name of the fungus.

From what I have seen first hand it is the strangest thing. It looked like moss to my untrained eye at first but upon investigation we found it not to be.

it felt like plastic.

I have been to several of the forests in California and see the same thing in all. Some are in more advanced stages of decay than others but none the less they all have it.

It is spread in many ways. Cars driving on the paved roads but even more so on the dirt roads then taking the crap with them home on there cars and spreading it even more. Also the dust kicked up is a major cause.

We have talked to rangers and they said very little but they do admit to knowing what it is and say there is nothing being done to stop it if they even could. they could have maybe a long time ago but ignored it so the logging could continue. Cant cut healthy trees if the public knows how few of them there really are. Chainsaws are another cause of the spread.

All of which I say is happening in California. Other places I am guessing as well but that is only a guess. It wont be long if it isn't yet anyhow.

Hope this is not what is happening to your trees
